The centre is compact — from Rådhustorget you reach the riverside walk in 3 minutes and Väven library with river views. Best base for weekend trips without a car.

Haga & University

The university district is quiet and has Lake Nydala right next to it — 4 km around the lake and a dog beach in summer. Gammlia open-air museum is 10 minutes on foot.

Hotels to choose from

Stora Hotellet is a design hotel right on the river — dogs welcome at no extra fee. Scandic Syd and Scandic Plaza are central with clear pet policies. U&Me Hotel is a newer design hotel at Vasaplan.

Umeå as a base for Norrland

Umeå is the gateway to the Västerbotten wilderness — the Vindel river, Hamptjärn and Tavelsjö are popular day trips. The train north to Kiruna or south to Sundsvall accepts dogs free of charge. The Wasaline ferry to Vaasa, Finland accepts dogs in cabins or in your car.

Season and winter tips

Summer (Jun–Aug) and ski week are peak. Winter walks along the river require paw balm — temperatures can drop below -20°C. Reflective vest is mandatory for dogs after dark; streets are dark from October to February.
