Travelling with a dog on Swedish trains is straightforward — but rules differ between operators. Full overview below.
SJ
On SJ dogs travel in dedicated pet/allergy carriages. Book a pet seat with your ticket — roughly half the normal fare. The dog stays at your feet, not on the seat.
Snälltåget
Allows dogs in selected carriages, free or for a small fee. Trains to Berlin via the train ferry can take dogs in compartments.
Öresund and commuter trains
- SL (Stockholm): dogs ride free in all carriages except those marked dog-free.
- Skånetrafiken: dogs ride free. Pick a carriage with a dog sign.
- Västtrafik (Gothenburg): dogs ride free in selected carriages.
Practical tips
- Book early — pet seats per departure are limited.
- Bring your own water and a blanket for the dog.
- Check with fellow passengers — allergy is a common reason to switch carriage.
