Travelling with a dog in the Nordics — rules, borders and passports 2026

Travelling between the Nordic countries with a dog is relatively easy — but the rules differ at the Norwegian and Swedish borders. Here's what you actually need.

EU pet passport

Every dog travelling within the EU/EEA must have a blue EU pet passport issued by a vet. It shows the microchip ID and a valid rabies vaccination, at least 21 days old.

Sweden ⇄ Denmark / Finland

Within the EU you only need a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination and an EU pet passport. No worming required.

Sweden ⇄ Norway

Norway is not in the EU. You need a microchip, EU pet passport, rabies vaccination and tapeworm treatment 24–120 hours before crossing the border. Declare the dog in the red customs lane on entry to Norway.

Flying with a dog in the Nordics

  • SAS, Norwegian and Finnair allow small dogs (usually under 8 kg) in the cabin in an approved carrier.
  • Larger dogs travel in the hold — always check temperature rules and booking windows.
  • Book a pet slot when booking the flight; spaces per flight are limited.

Road-trip tips

The dog must be secured during the trip — harness with seatbelt, carrier, or a cage in the boot. Stop every two hours for a break and water. Never leave the dog in a sunny car — temperature can rise 20 °C in 10 minutes.
