Find a hotel →Postcode 101 is the heart of Reykjavík — Laugavegur, Hallgrímskirkja and the Tjörnin pond all within 10 minutes on foot. Konsulat Hotel and ION City Hotel both sit here — design-led with clear pet policies for guests cleared to bring dogs to Iceland.
The Old Harbour by Harpa concert hall has whale-watching boats (no dogs), strong restaurants and a quick walk to Grandi with Whales of Iceland and colourful warehouses. Hotel Reykjavík Marina is right in the middle.
East Reykjavík with the city's biggest park, Laugardalslaug outdoor pool and large lawns — where local dog owners gather in the mornings. Good if you want to stay slightly outside the centre but close to green space.
ION City Hotel and Konsulat Hotel are our central recommendations — both design hotels with clear pet policies. Hotel Reykjavík Marina at the harbour and Reykjavik EDITION (5★) are further options. All welcome dogs with proper import permits or local dogs.
Iceland has among the world's strictest import rules for dogs — four weeks of home quarantine plus two weeks at Hrísey or Einangrunarstöð (official facility). Not realistic for a short stay. Requirements include microchip, rabies vaccine, blood test, parasite treatment and an import permit from MAST at least 30 days in advance. Plan 6 months ahead.
Tjörnin (the central pond), Klambratún and Öskjuhlíð around Perlan are popular dog walks. Mt Esja east of the city is a hike for active dogs — 2–3 hours round trip via Þverfellshorn. Heiðmörk south of the city has trails in 30 km of lava forest. NOTE: Leashes are mandatory in Reykjavík parks, fines up to 15,000 ISK.
If you want canine company without relocating your own dog: 'Borrow a Dog' via local kennel clubs, the Icelandic Sheepdog Association runs walks, and several dog-friendly cafés (Reykjavík Roasters welcomes dogs) operate in the centre.
Only with four weeks of home quarantine plus two weeks at an official facility — not practical for a weekend. The rules are among the world's strictest and require at least 6 months of preparation.
ION City Hotel, Konsulat Hotel, Hotel Reykjavík Marina and Reykjavik EDITION — for local dogs or dogs with a valid MAST import permit.
