Complete guide: dogs in Tromsø

Neighbourhoods and where to stay

Centre & harbour

Tromsø's centre is compact on Tromsøya island. Storgata, the harbour walk and Polaria are all within 10 minutes on foot. Clarion The Edge and Scandic Ishavshotel both sit by the harbour with views of the Arctic Cathedral.

Tromsdalen & Arctic Cathedral

The east side of the bridge has the Arctic Cathedral and the Fjellheisen cable car. Quiet and close to nature — good if you want to combine the city with quick hikes.

Northern lights and winter hiking

Tromsø is one of the world's best aurora locations (Sep–Mar). Dogs can join most outdoor experiences, but not official aurora bus tours. Rent a car instead and drive 30 minutes outside the city — Kvaløya and Ersfjordbotn are classic spots.

Hotels

Clarion Hotel The Edge at the harbour and Scandic Ishavshotel are both dog-friendly with harbour views. Radisson Blu Tromsø is a third option with a generous policy. All three are within 5 minutes' walk of Storgata and the best restaurants.

Getting here with a dog

Fly Stockholm–Tromsø via Oslo (3 h total). SAS and Norwegian accept dogs in cargo crates (up to 32 kg) or small dogs in cabin (max 8 kg). Hurtigruten from Bergen takes 7 days and accepts dogs in cabins — a unique way to reach the Arctic without flying.

Winter safety and gear

-15 to -25°C is common Jan–Feb. Paw balm, dog boots, a coat and reflectors are essential. Limit walks to 30 minutes at a time and always use reflectors — polar night runs Nov–Jan. Bring a thermos of warm water — outside water freezes fast.

Summer and midnight sun

May–July is midnight sun with 24 hours of daylight. Walks can happen anytime but the dog may struggle to sleep — blackout curtains and routine matter. Whale watching (Jun–Jul) usually does not accept dogs.
